American Express is not a partner with American Airlines, but there is a work around so that you can transfer Amex points to AA miles. There is two ways you can get American Express points to book American Airlines, the first is via British Airways and another is via Aeroplan.
Both methods will require you to transfer your American Express points over to either British Airways or Aeroplan and then use those points via that portal to book American Airlines tickets.
